Bengal History

The Bengal Cat is a unique breed of cat in that it is the only spotted breed which is directly descended from a wild ancestor - the Asian Leopard Cat (ALC)

The domestic Bengal gets its name from the ALC's scientific name (Felis bengalensis) - hence the Bengal. Asian Leopard cats are small wild cats found in southern and eastern Asia

The goal in producing the Bengal cat is to replicate the wild appearance of their ancestor the Asian Leopard Cat while maintaining the loving nature of a gentle house cat

The Bengal Cat originates from crossing a domestic cat in particular the Abyssinian, American Shorthair, Burmese, or Egyptian Mau with the Asian Leopard Cat

Breeding The Domestic Bengal Cat - the Bengal Cat is recognised for championship competition by most international domestic cat associations including TICA, ACFA, GCCF, and AACE, after, four to five generations of Bengal-to-Bengal breedings

The Bengal is one of the newest and most intriguing cat breeds, it has earned fast growing popularity as the public becomes aware of its exotic existence
